I temi
Il Déjà-vu: la sensazione di aver già visto o vissuto un momento; la mostra, infatti, gioca anche con il fatto che le opere esposte sono già state presentate dalle gallerie in esibizioni precedenti.
il Memory Glitch: (ricordate Matrix?) una parte del cervello registra quello che stai vivendo come nuovo, un’altra lo riconosce come già visto. Le due cose non coincidono, ma avvengono nello stesso momento. È una frizione minima, quasi impercettibile, ma sufficiente a farti perdere sicurezza. Non è davvero un ricordo:
è il presente che, per un attimo, si comporta come se lo fosse. Ed è esattamente quello che succede nella mostra: riconosci forme, immagini, situazioni, ma qualcosa non torna mai del tutto.
Il concetto History doesn’t repeat itself, it rhymes: la storia non si ripete ma ha un ritmo; la storia non torna mai uguale, semmai assomiglia a qualcosa che abbiamo già visto. Imperi che cadono e ritornano, crisi che ci sembrano familiari, tensioni che sembrano nuove ma che in realtà riconosciamo.
Tutto ci appare noto, ma non è mai identico.
Il lavoro del curatore
Qui sta la parte fondamentale dell’incredibile lavoro curatoriale che è stato fatto in questa collettiva.
Le opere che, singolarmente hanno il loro significato, portata estetica, storica e di messaggio, nel momento in cui vengono accostate si spostano, si influenzano, iniziano a generare nuovi significati. Non stai più guardando singoli lavori, ma un sistema di relazioni. Entrano in gioco i temi della mostra, riconosci elementi familiari, ma il senso complessivo cambia continuamente.
Lo spazio
Concrete, nel cuore di Alserkal Avenue, è probabilmente l’unico vero spazio espositivo negli Emirati pensato per mostre di questo tipo. Non una galleria, non un museo, ma un contenitore.
Progettato da Rem Koolhaas con lo studio OMA, nasce come struttura completamente adattabile: pareti mobili, configurazioni che cambiano, uno spazio che ogni volta si trasforma in base a ciò che ospita.
Un’architettura che si lascia usare, che risponde perfettamente alla sua vocazione, mai uguale a sé stesso, riscritto ogni volta che si apre al pubblico, pur mantenendo una presenza molto riconoscibile: un volume essenziale, quasi brutale, con le sue pareti laterali spruzzate di cemento e pezzi di vetro che brillano di notte come brillanti su un vestito da sera, che se lo tocchi ti fai male ma non puoi resistere dal farlo.
Uno spazio che non compete mai con le opere, ma le mette nelle condizioni di generare qualcosa in più.
E in una mostra come questa, dove il senso nasce dalle relazioni, questo fa tutta la differenza, non esiste altro posto a Dubai dove questa mostra poteva avere più senso!

The themes
Déjà vu: the feeling of having already seen or lived a moment.
The exhibition also plays with this idea quite literally, as many of the works on view have already been presented by the galleries in previous shows.
Memory glitch (remember The Matrix?):
one part of the brain registers what you’re experiencing as new, while another recognizes it as something already seen. The two don’t align, yet they occur at the same time. It’s a minimal, almost imperceptible friction, but enough to unsettle you. It’s not really a memory. It’s the present moment behaving, briefly, as if it were one. And that is exactly what happens in the exhibition:
you recognize forms, images, situations, but something never fully adds up.
History doesn’t repeat itself, it rhymes:
History never returns in the same way; at most, it resembles something we have already seen. Empires fall and rise again, crises feel familiar, tensions seem new yet oddly recognizable. Everything appears known, but nothing is ever identical.
The curatorial work
This is where the strength of the exhibition lies. The works, individually, carry their own meaning, aesthetic weight, and historical and conceptual depth.
But once placed in relation to one another, something shifts. They influence each other, reposition themselves, and begin to generate new meanings. You are no longer looking at individual works, but at a system of relationships. This is where the themes of the exhibition come into play: you recognize familiar elements, but the overall meaning keeps shifting.
The space
Concrete, in the heart of Alserkal Avenue, is arguably the only true exhibition space in the UAE designed for this kind of show.
Not a gallery, not a museum, but a container.
Designed by Rem Koolhaas with OMA, it was conceived as a fully adaptable structure: movable walls, changing configurations, a space that transforms each time according to what it hosts.
An architecture that allows itself to be used, perfectly aligned with its purpose.
Never the same, rewritten each time it opens to the public, while maintaining a highly recognizable presence: an essential, almost brutal volume, with its sprayed concrete side walls embedded with fragments of glass that catch the light at night like diamonds on an evening dress — sharp to the touch, almost dangerous, and yet impossible to resist. A space that never competes with the works, but enables them to generate something more. And in an exhibition like this, where meaning emerges through relationships,
this makes all the difference.
There is no other place in Dubai where this exhibition could make more sense.
